To investigate the conventional history, limited with a riddle….Is something that energizes everyone around…
Trek to Upper Mustang is an adventurous venture in the trans-Himalayan region of the mystical land of the old Buddhist kingdom. For a long time, this region in Nepal was strictly prohibited for foreign travelers and remained isolated for decades from the outside world. In 1992, the Upper Mustang got opened for trekkers from all around the world with strict rules and regulations by the government of Nepal. Trekking to Upper Mustang offers a distinct travel experience. You can see breathtaking landscapes, which resemble Tibetan scenery more than Nepal's as this area is bordered by Tibet.
The prohibition on the region has allowed the locals and their rich culture to evolve within it. Moreover, it has also well-preserved the flora and fauna found in this part of Nepal. Even today, less than 1000 trekkers trek in Upper Mustang every year, thanks to government laws. Expensive permits with at least two members in the group (not including guide/porters) make Upper Mustang an exclusive place in the Himalayas to trek. Life here is still the same as hundreds of years ago, which makes trekking in Mustang a rare privilege.
Geographically, Upper Mustang is part of the Tibetan plateau. One of the reasons for an expensive permit is, this place has an open border with Tibet. You have to ascend further north of Kagbeni to enter Upper Mustang. To this date, there are numerous caves, minerals, monasteries, and antiques that are undiscovered because of the complex terrain. On Upper Mustang Trekking, you will get to learn about ancient history and visit centuries-old monasteries. The Sky Burial funeral practice culture and polyandry marriage system still exist here, and the beliefs and practices of the locals are highly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism.
The trail follows a windy and rugged route that goes through picturesque villages and narrow alleyways, crossing suspension bridges, ravines, and passes. You can see stunning semi-arid deserts like views with colorful rock formations and snow-capped Himalayan mountains like Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Mt. Nilgiri (7,061 m), Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m), Tilicho Peak (7,134 m), Bhrikuti Peak (6460 m), and many others. The region is surrounded by a series of legends, myths, and mysteries and the available records of events in Lo Manthang travel back to the early 8th century.
